How a Snapshot Report Helps WPI Accelerate the Time to License an Invention

A Poorly Written Idea Description Delays your Licensing Revenue!

Two steps you can take in less than 15 minutes to encourage a faculty or staff member to improve their invention description to avoid future patent problems:

Todd Keiller, Director of the WPI IP & Innovation (IPI) Office, says that these two steps typically take less than 15 minutes.

Step 1 – The WPI IPI Office automatically finds keywords and searches multiple patent databases to quickly identify the potential prior art.

Todd says that a faculty member will typically email or call him directly with a general description of his (or her) idea… even before submitting a formal disclosure. Todd then takes that idea description and pastes it into Search Real Fast to quickly find keywords relevant to the inventor’s idea. With one click he can use these same keywords to simultaneously search multiple patent databases.

Easily perform an Express Parallel Search of seven free patent sites.

Just paste an Idea Description into this Express search box and click SEARCH – NO LOGIN Required:

Our Express Parallel – Tech and Patents Search Application and the results from searching three Public Patent Search Databases will automatically appear in separate browser tabs!

Step 2 – The WPI Office of Tech Commercialization then creates a PDF Snapshot Report and sends it to the inventor.

When Todd sends this PDF Snapshot Report to his faculty, he explains to them that there appears to be a number of patents, applications, or articles in this research area.  He then instructs them on how they can see the search results for each patent database – by simply clicking on the database web URL link in this report.

he search results in the Snapshot Report also show the queries using their keywords extracted from their idea text description. If the search results do not reflect the inventor’s full idea, then their idea description needs refinement to clearly identify the unique and novel parts of their invention.

After reviewing the relevant search results, the inventor is encouraged to refine their idea description to target the unique and novel concepts that are different from all the ideas in these patent search results. Their description often needs to clearly identify those parts of their idea that distinguish it from existing competitive examples shown in these initial search results.
